"C'è - scrive Charpentier - una marche à l'Oie che, in quanto cammino iniziatico, implica il passaggio da una "forza" terrestre a un'altra.

Nel percorso a spirale che conduce dall'esterno verso il "'giardino dell'oca", nelle varie icone che lo compongono, incontriamo l'oca nella caselle numerate con i numeri: 0, 5, 9, 14, 23, 27, 32, 36, 41, 45, SO, 54, 59.
Se osserviamo gli intervalli tra una casella e l'altra, notiamo la seguente serie di numeri: 0, 5, 4, 5, 9, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4. Raggruppiamo ora i numeri: 0 e 5 dà 5. 4 e 5 dà 9. Segue il 9, poi, di nuovo, una serie di 4 e di 5, che danno 9.
Infine, 4.

Allíinizio abbiamo l'oca posizionata nella casella cinque. Alla fine del percorso, il giocatore, per entrare nell'ultima porta, prima del "giardino dellíOca", ossia nella sossantatreesima casella, deve compiere un salto di 4 caselle. Il "giardino dell'Oca" è alla quinta casella, ossia, se fosse numerata, alla sessantaquattresima.

La nuova serie numerica è dunque: 5, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 4. Ora, non sfugge, che 6X9 dà 54, ossia 5 e 4: esattamente i due balzi iniziale e finale, la cui somma, peraltro, dà ancora 9. La serie, pertanto, si completa, con il numero 63 (''giardino dell'Ocal"), che è il risultato di sette volte 9, o, se si preferisce, di 6 volte 5 (30), più sei volte 4 (24) più 9 (vedi la prima serie numerica).

Il 63, nel Medioevo, era il numero dei custodi delle porte dei sette santuari, che gli adepti dovevano varcare, dopo aver dimostrato il possesso di un'opportuna istruzione sapienziale. Se il ""giardino dell'Oca", oltre l'ultima porta, fosse numerato, avrebbe il numero 64 e l'ultimo balzo potrebbe essere di 5 caselle, dando luogo alla serie: 5,9,9,9,9,9,9,5, costituente un numero palindromo: 5999 9995 (speculare, equilibrato).

Vediamo ora il possibile significato dei numeri, secondo la numerologia egizia.

Con il numero 4, rappresentabile anche con un rettangolo, si allude ad un equilibrio che certamente si raggiunge con la morte, anche se non si preclude la possibilità che possa essere raggiunto in vita. La via per raggiungere in vita quella stessa condizione pare sia indicata dal numero cinque, l'amore, rappresentato con il geroglifico della stella a cinque punte, la cui dizione è tu, contenuta nel numero 4 (ftu). Consideriamo anche che i pitagorici chiamavano il cinque assenza di contesa, in quanto concilia il dispari (tre) con il pari (due).

Vediamo ora il 9 o pesa o pestch: significa tornare indietro, ricominciare, oppure splendere, illuminazione.

Il gioco dell'oca, dunque, stando a queste possibili interpretazioni legate all'antica scienza numerologica egizia, basata sull'omofonia (la Cabala linguistica degli alchimisti, la lingua verde), si propone come una via iniziatica, dove l'equilibrio e l'amore si intrecciano e dove il procedere dell'adepto può essere contrassegnato dall'illuminazione o dall'invito a tornare indietro, a ritentare la prova, secondo l'insegnamento che vuole ogni simbolo bivalente nelle sue valenze. Il 9 può essere un passo illuminante o un arresto del percorso: un ritorno indietro.

Va notato che anche il lancio dei dadi può dare combinazioni diverse, sia pure con lo stesso numero. Ad esempio un tiro a 9 con 4 e 5 porta alla casella 53. Un tiro dello stesso valore, ma con 6 e 3 porta alla casella 26. Cambia il gioco.

Vediamo ora il significato degli altri numeri.

Sei volte cinque dà 30 (Maba): il numero dell'Unità occulta, rappresenta la totalità delle manifestazioni. Mabiu sono i trenta giudici, umani o divini, mentre Mabit è la Corte entro la quale i trenta si riuniscono. Sei volte 4 è 24.

Il numero sei, secondo l'elaborazione di Nedim Vlora ha una valenza profetica, annunciando la realizzazione di un universo in perfetto equlibrio. Il 24, dunque, essendo 6 volte 4 è un numero che indica la tendenza alla corrispondenza tra l'equilibrio individuale e quello cosmico.

Vediamo ora il 63, ossia il numero che indica il percorso verso il "Giardino dell'Oca": è il prodotto di 7 volte 9 e il sette è numero particolarmente significativo in tutte le tradizioni.

Seguiamo ancora, come per i precedenti numeri, il criterio della numerologia egizia basata sulle omofonie. Sette si pronuncia sefekh, oppure skhef. "Ancora una volta - scrive in proposito Nadim Vlora - un sinonimo, s-fehk, dalla probabile pronuncia similare, indica l'opposto di ciò che il numero vuol significare: ossia slegare, sciogliere, rilassarsi; perciò è possibile che il numero indichi un legame, cosÏ come suggerito dalle varianti grafiche:

Pertanto, se il quattro sottintende il raggiungimento di uno stato di equilibrio in vita - nonostante una siffatta dimensione si raggiunga più frequentemente con la morte - e il tre indica il primo stato derivato dalla trascendenza, per conseguenza il sette simboleggia lo stato immediatamente successivo, cioè il completo inserimento nella spiritualità cosmica, quindi nel Dio trascendente e nella sua volontà. La notazione grafica che usufruisce della stella, inoltre, indica anche il fondamento essenziale perché una simile fusione si realizzi già in vita, ossia l'amore, l'unico che consenta una compiuta spiritualizzazione".

Il 63, dunque, rappresenta 7 volte l'illuminazione (nove) nel percorso contrassegnato dal passo dell'oca (quattro e cinque, amore ed equilibrio), che conduce al completo inserimento nella spiritualità cosmica.

Perché 63 caselle? Potrebbe bastarci quanto abbiamo detto sin qui, ma il gioco, proprio perché si ricollega a quello più antico del "serpente arrotolato", nonché per la stessa simbologia dell'oca, che abbiamo più sopra tratteggiato, ci suggerisce più antiche relazioni.

L'Occhio di Horus, come é ormai noto da studi condotti da valenti studiosi, é la rappresentazione grafica di proporzioni numeriche rappresentabili anche come frazioni (1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1/1) che indicano, nel loro insieme l'unità in termini di 64/64. Questo per quanto riguarda l'occhio destro. Per quanto riguarda il sinistro, mutilato da Seth e ricomposto da Thot, è incompleto, ossia è 63/64. Ecco il nostro 63. Per raggiungere l'Unità, ossia 64/64, si deve aggiungere un sessantaquattresimo.

Il "giardino dell'Oca" è dunque l'Unità e il percorso a spirale indica appunto la via del ritorno.

Se il "giardino dell'Oca' fosse numerato porterebbe il numero 64 e la serie numerica del ìpasso dell'Oca," potrebbe essere: 5 999 999 5. ora, il 999 è simbolo della somma illuminazione e 5 dell'amore. La serie è palindroma, ossia percorribile in un senso e nell'altro, cosÏ come la venuta dall'origine e il ritorno all'origine (il centro della spirale) e tuttavia, cosi come per l'occhio di Horus, manca a noi la conoscenza di 1/64. La via è fatta di sette porte, di sette gradini, da percorrere con equilibrio (4) e con amore (5). Non è detto che il ìgiardino dell'Oca", superata l'ultima porta, non si apra. Notiamo, infine, che 64 è il risultato di 8 per 8, ossia il quadrato di otto (numero associato alla conoscenza) e il quadrato di otto è la scacchiera, che, appunto, è composta di otto file di otto caselle, delle quali 32 nere e 32 bianche.

Il nero e il bianco si alternano, in una concezione, come quella egizia, secondo la quale ad ogni realtà corrisponde il suo doppio, di segno opposto e complementare (paredro).

Quello della scacchiera è il gioco della conoscenza, ma questo è argomento che merita uno spazio a sé.

In the spirai path that leads from outside to the goose's garden, the goose's image appears on squares O, 5, 9, 14, 23, 27, 32, 36, 41, 45, 50, 54, and 59. The intervals between each are therefore O, 5, 4, 5, 9, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, and 4. Adding these numbers, O and 5 equal 5; 4 and 5 equal 9. Next comes the 9. Then comes a series of 4s and 5s, which again equal 9. Finally there's a 4.

At the beginning we bave a goose on square 5. At the end, to make it through the last gale on the 63rd square, which leads to the goose's garden, you must jump four squares. The goose's garden is the fifth square - that is, if it was numbered it would be the 64th square on the board.

The new series of numbers is therefore 5, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, and 4. Of course, the six nines add up to 54, that is, 5 and 4 or the numbers of the first and last jumps - which again add up to 9.

The series, therefore finish es with 63 (the goose's garden), which is the product of 7 and 9 or, if you prefer, 6 x 5 (30) + 6 x 4 (24) + 9 (see the first series of numbers).

In the Middle Ages, 63 was the number of guards on the gates of the seven sanctuaries, which the adepts had to cross once their learning had reached a certain stage. If the goose's garden, beyond the final square, was numbered, it would be 64, and the finaljump would be five squares. This would make the series 5, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, and 5, in other words a palindrome, each half a mirror image of the other, which therefore represents balance.

Let's now turn to what these numbers would bave meant according to Egyptian numerology.

Four, which could also be represented by a rectangle, implied the balance that one reached upon death - although it wasn't ruled out that you could also achieve this balance in life. The path one needed to follow to achieve this balance was lo ve, which was represented by the number five, which, in turn, was represented by a five-pointed star, the word for which was pronounced "_u" - a part of the word for four, "f_u." (The Pythagoreans also regarded five as representing harmony, since it resolves the odd (three) and the even (two).

Nine - pest or pestch - signified going backwards and starting again, or illumination.

In view of Egyptian numerology, therefore, the game of the goose is a kind of initiation, in which harmony and lave intertwine and the progress of the disciple can be marked either by illumination or an invitation to go back to the beginning, to try again. Nine can be either a step toward illumination or a dead end, a return to the beginning.

It also should be noted that throwing two dice can give different combinations of numbers, some of them adding up to che same total. For example, a nine made up of a four and a five takes you to square 53. A nine made up of a six and a ebree takes you to square 26 and completely changes che game.

Let's now look at che numerology of the other numbers.

Six multiplied by five gives 30 (Maba), the number of occult unity, representing che totality of alt manifestations. Mabiu is che 30 judges, human or divine, while Mabit is che court in which Che 30 come together. Six times four is 24. Number six, according to Nedim Vlora, has a prophetic value, announcing che realization of a universe in perfect harmony. Twenty-four, that is 6 x 4, indicates che correspondence between individuai and cosmic balance.

Then there's 63, that is, che number that represents che gate to che goose 's garden. Sixty-three is che product of seven and nine, and seven is a particularly important number in all traditions.

Let's continue to apply the rules of Egyptian numerology to these numbers. Seven is pronounced "sefekh" or "skhef". "Once again, " writes Nadim Vlora, "a synonym of 'sfehk, ' which was probably pronounced in the same way, this representing che apposite of what che number itself means - thatiss, to untie, to loosen, and to relax. lt is possible, therefore, that che number represented a link, such asiss suggested by it's different depictions. "Therefore, if four represented reaching harmony during life - although this dimension is more frequently reached in death - and three represented the first state in transcendence, seven must therfore bave symbolized the state immediately afler that, that is, immersion in the cosmic spirit or a union with God and God's will. In addition, the graphic figure that uses the star also indicates the essential basis of life because a similar fusion also takes place in life - lave, in other words, the only thing that leads to complete spiritualization".

The number 63, therefore, represents seven multiplied by illumination (nine) in the path mapped out by the goose (four and five, lave and harmony), which leads to complete union with cosmic spirituality.

Why are there 63 squares? We could base our answer on what l've already said bere. But the game, because of its connection with the Egyptian game of the "coiled snake" and the symbolism of the goose, suggests more ancient connections.

The Eye of Horus, as has been established by a number of academics, is a graphic representation of the numerical proportions 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 1/1, which together indicate unity in 64ths.

But this is only the right eye. The lef eye, which was mutilated by Seth and remade by Toth, is incomplete, representing only 63/64. And here's our 63. To achieve unity, that is, 64/64, you need to add another 1/64.

The goose's garden is therefore unity and the spiral path represents the return road.

If the goose' sgarden was numbered, it would be 64 and the series would be 5 999 999 5. Now the 999 is a s symbol of illumination and 5 of love. The series is a palindrome, so it t can be followed either way, just like the path away from our origins and back to our origins (the center of the spiral). Like the Eye of Horus, our knowledge is 1/64 incomplete. The road is made up of seven gates, seven steps, that need to be followed with balance (four) and lave (five). It doesn't go without saying that when we pass through che final gatethe goose's garden won't be open. Finally, l'd point out that 64 is the product of 8 and 8, that is the square of eight (a number assoeiated with knowledge) or the cehess- board, which comprises eight rows of eight squares, of whieh 32 are black and 32 are white.

Black and white alternate, and this can be read as every reality correìponding to a counter but eomplementary reality.
